Tummy Tuck

A healthy diet, regular exercise, and a positive lifestyle are essential for a tight, flat abdomen. Unfortunately, sometimes excess fat will not respond to sit-ups, crunches, or low-calorie salads. Abdominoplasty or “tummy tuck” is a cosmetic surgery procedure used to make the abdomen thinner and more firm. The surgery involves removing excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen to tighten the muscle and fascia of the abdominal wall. Patients with loose or sagging tissues that develop after pregnancy or major weight loss often seek this type of surgery to achieve a more athletic, firm, and attractive look.

Different Types of Tummy Tucks

Dr. Lalla understands that each patient has a unique set of desired outcomes, which is why he customizes each abdominoplasty to accommodate an individual’s needs. Our surgical tummy tuck offerings include:

Complete Tummy Tuck

In a complete abdominoplasty, Dr. Lalla will make a hip-to-hip incision just above the pubic area. He will then tighten the muscles with sutures and trim away excess muscle and fat. Dr. Lalla may then use Liposuction to smooth the transition areas between the abdomen and the flanks.

Extended Tummy Tuck

An extended abdominoplasty involves Dr. Lalla performing a complete tummy tuck in conjunction with a lateral thigh lift. The addition of a lateral thigh lift helps shape the flanks and can smooth out the contours of the upper thigh.

Partial Tummy Tuck

A partial abdominoplasty involves a smaller incision, and the abdominal skin is not completely detached from the underlying tissue. This tummy tuck surgery is less extensive and invasive than a complete abdominoplasty.

High Lateral Tension Tummy Tuck

In this new procedure, our tummy tuck surgeon tightens abdominal muscles vertically, as is done in a standard abdominoplasty, as well as horizontally. Results include a flatter abdomen and a more defined waistline.

Circumferential Tummy Tuck

A circumferential abdominoplasty, also called a belt lipectomy or body lift, combines an extended abdominoplasty with a buttock lift. The incision completely circles the body like a belt. This cosmetic plastic surgery is most appropriate for individuals who have experienced massive weight loss and want to remove excess skin.

Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini abdominoplasty treats baggy skin hanging in the lower stomach area, commonly called the navel. By removing excess skin and fatty tissue from this area, patients can improve body contours and reduce laxity in their lower abdomen.

Who Could Benefit From a Tummy Tuck?

Ideal candidates for a tummy tuck are in good physical condition but have pockets of fat or loose skin that are not responding to diet and exercise. Older, slightly obese people whose skin has lost elasticity could also benefit from a tummy tuck. We recommend delaying your procedure until after any substantial weight loss because the skin in your abdominal area typically loosens during these changes.

Tummy tuck surgeries can also be useful for women with excess skin and stretched muscles from pregnancy and childbirth. Results will diminish if women continue to bear children, so we advise patients who plan to become pregnant to consider postponing their abdominoplasty procedure until they finish having children.

Recovering From an Abdominoplasty

Recovery times for a tummy tuck differ depending on the specific procedure. Patients should wear an abdominal binder for about six weeks after surgery to support the abdomen and avoid any fluid buildups. Patients should also refrain from vigorous physical activity for at least six weeks. Dr. Lalla and our attentive team will walk you through the steps necessary for a complete and efficient recovery.
